As Armed Forces Week approaches, we're taking a moment to reflect on the people behind the uniforms, the families who support them, and the experiences that shape the communities around them.
For Joanne Bowmer, founder of JB Property Law, supporting Armed Forces personnel isn't simply a professional specialism. It's personal. Having spent years as part of a military family while her husband served in the Army, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Joanne understands first-hand the challenges that service life can bring.
We sat down with Joanne to talk about those experiences, why they continue to shape her work today, and what supporting the Armed Forces community means to her.

Supporting Armed Forces Clients.
Property transactions can be stressful for anyone. But when you're serving in the Armed Forces, are a reservist, or have spent years moving from posting to posting, buying or selling a home often comes with an extra layer of pressure.
At JB Property Law, founder Joanne Bowmer offers a service shaped not only by legal expertise, but by lived experience.
We spoke with Joanne about her work supporting Armed Forces clients and the experiences that have influenced her approach.
Q: Joanne, what drew you to working with Armed Forces clients?
Joanne: It wasn't something I planned, it happened quite naturally.
Military life teaches you that plans can change in an instant. One day you're settling into a home, the next you're preparing for a deployment or a posting hundreds of miles away. Living through that gave me a real appreciation for how much resilience Armed Forces families show every day. When I began practising conveyancing, I naturally found myself drawn to helping people facing those same challenges because I understood what was happening behind the scenes.
Q: How has that personal experience influenced your approach to conveyancing?
Joanne: It’s made me much more aware of what clients are dealing with behind the scenes. When someone is managing a move around a deployment or a posting, there’s very little room for added stress. So I focus on being proactive, clear, and reliable. Anticipating issues where possible and keeping everything moving.
Military spouses become accidental experts in logistics. Think of them as basically unpaid project managers with a talent for finding important documents at very short notice. My job as a lawyer mirrors that, if you need to move in 5 weeks, this skill comes in handy!
Q: Has working with Armed Forces clients changed you professionally?
Joanne: Yes, it’s made me more adaptable and more empathetic. Every situation can be different, and I’ve learned not to take a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s also reinforced the importance of clear communication, especially when clients may not always be easily reachable.
I like to stay one step ahead where I can. Conveyancing will always have surprises, but I'd rather they be small surprises than the sort that ruin your Friday afternoon.
Q: What makes conveyancing for Armed Forces personnel unique?
Joanne: Flexibility is probably the biggest thing. Not everyone is available to pop into an office or answer the phone during the day. Some clients are overseas, some are on exercises, and some are working to very tight deadlines linked to postings.
Every situation is different, so you have to be able to adapt. The other important factor is trust. Clients are often relying on you to manage things while they're somewhere else entirely, and I take that responsibility very seriously.
Q: What concerns do Armed Forces clients usually have when buying or selling a property?
Joanne: Timing is usually top of the list. If you're moving because of a posting, there often isn't much flexibility in the dates. People naturally want reassurance that everything is progressing as it should. Distance can also be a concern. If you're deployed or based elsewhere, you need confidence that somebody is keeping an eye on everything for you.
My job is to give clients that confidence and keep them informed every step of the way.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about this area of your work?
Joanne: It's the connection and the sense of giving something back.
The Armed Forces community has been a significant part of my life for many years. I've seen the sacrifices that service personnel make, but I've also seen the sacrifices made by their partners, children, parents and friends. When I help a military family move into a new home, or help a veteran put down roots after years of moving around the country, it feels like more than just a property transaction. It's often part of a much bigger life story.
This Armed Forces Week, we'll travel more than 400 miles to attend a Welsh Guards Afghanistan memorial. Among those being remembered is a soldier who served alongside my husband and never made it home. Moments like that remind you that military service isn't something that stays neatly in the past. The people, memories and experiences remain with families for a lifetime.
That's why supporting service personnel, veterans and their families means so much to me. It's my small way of helping a community that has given so much to others. It's incredibly rewarding when a client tells me they felt supported throughout the process or that I helped make a stressful move feel more manageable.
Q: Do you also work with reservists?
Joanne: Absolutely. Reservists deserve a lot of credit. They're often balancing a civilian career, family life and military commitments all at the same time. Frankly, I'm tired just thinking about it.
Life can change quite quickly if they're mobilised or their circumstances shift unexpectedly, so flexibility becomes really important. I try to make the process work around their commitments rather than expecting them to fit around the process.
Q: How about veterans?
Joanne: Many veterans are at a stage where they're looking to put down roots after years of moving around. For some, buying a home represents stability and a fresh chapter, which makes it a particularly meaningful milestone.
It's a privilege to help people through that transition and make sure the process feels straightforward and reassuring.
Q: Is there something that connects all the Armed Forces clients you work with?
Joanne: Resilience. Whether someone is serving full-time, is a reservist, or has left the military, there's often a remarkable ability to adapt when circumstances change.
I've always admired that mindset, and it's one of the reasons I enjoy working with the Armed Forces community so much.
Q: If you could sum up your approach in three words, what would they be?
Joanne: Reliable, proactive, and understanding.
Q: What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
Joanne: People often assume I must have considered a military career myself because of how much I work with Armed Forces clients. The truth is, I never considered it. There is no way I could run with a 20kg pack on my back! My connection comes through my husband's service and the experiences we shared as a military family.
Looking back, I realised that while service personnel wear the uniform, there's a whole support network around them helping to keep life moving. In many ways, that's how I see my role now. I can't control postings, deployments or relocations, but I can help make the property side of things feel a little easier.
Q: Finally, what does success look like for you when working with a client?
Joanne: Success is when a client reaches completion feeling informed, supported and relieved that it's all come together. Ideally, I'd like them to remember the excitement of moving into their new home rather than the legal paperwork that got them there. If I've done my job properly, conveyancing should be the least interesting part of the story.
Final Thoughts
Behind every posting order, deployment and relocation is a person, a family and a story. For many Armed Forces personnel, reservists and veterans, buying or selling a home isn't just another transaction. It often takes place during periods of significant change, uncertainty or transition.
At JB Property Law, Joanne Bowmer combines legal expertise with something equally important: genuine understanding. Having lived the realities of military life herself, she appreciates the pressures that can come with service and the importance of having someone you can trust to keep things moving when life is already demanding enough.
This Armed Forces Week, we recognise and thank all those who serve, have served, and the families who stand beside them.
Supporting the Armed Forces community isn't simply part of what we do at JB Property Law. It's something that means a great deal to us personally.
