On Saturday 27 June 2026, we had the privilege of attending the unveiling of the Welsh Guards Afghanistan Memorial in Wrexham. A deeply moving and significant occasion for serving personnel, veterans, and families.

Held in conjunction with Armed Forces Day, the event brought together members of the Welsh Guards community and the wider public to honour those who lost their lives during the Afghanistan conflict.

The memorial in Wrexham holds particular national importance. It is the first dedicated public memorial in Wales to honour Welsh Guards soldiers who died during the Afghanistan conflict.

For many families, this memorial provides something that has long been missing. A place to reflect, remember, and grieve closer to home. As has been widely recognised, visiting former conflict zones such as Afghanistan is not possible for most families, making a permanent place of remembrance all the more important.

Positioned within Bodhyfryd Memorial Gardens, the memorial stands not only as a tribute to those who were lost, but as a lasting symbol of respect, sacrifice, and regimental pride.

The Atmosphere on the Day

The event was marked by a strong sense of unity and quiet reflection. From the moment attendees gathered, there was a clear feeling of respect and shared purpose. Veterans, serving soldiers, families, and members of the public stood side by side. A powerful reminder of the enduring bond within the Armed Forces community.

The day itself was truly memorable. Set against the beautiful backdrop of St Giles' Church, with the sun shining throughout, the service was attended by more than 300 people. The magnificent performance by the Brymbo Male Choir added great poignancy to the occasion, before the service concluded with a moving rendition of the Last Post.

A procession then made its way through the town, led by the Welsh Guards Regimental Band in their iconic bearskin hats. Their performance was exceptional, and the streets of Wrexham were lined with people applauding in a heartfelt show of respect and remembrance.

The memorial was then unveiled, where it now stands proudly alongside the Falklands Memorial as a lasting tribute.

The names of the fallen soldiers were read aloud, ensuring each was remembered with the dignity and honour they deserve. This was followed by another poignant rendition of the Last Post, bringing a moment of quiet reflection for all in attendance.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Wrexham Memorial Club, where drinks were shared, conversations continued, and many "pull up a sandbag" stories were fondly exchanged between veterans, families, and friends.

It was an emotional and deeply moving day. One that Ash and I felt incredibly privileged to be part of. It was an honour to stand alongside so many people in remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The service, parade, and wreath-laying created a moving and respectful atmosphere, allowing time for both personal reflection and collective remembrance.

A Personal Perspective

For Ashley, having served in the Armed Forces and on deployment attached to the Welsh Guards, attending this event was particularly meaningful. The connection between those who serve extends far beyond active duty. Events such as this are not only about remembrance, but about standing alongside fellow servicemen and women, past and present and ensuring that those who made the ultimate sacrifice are never forgotten.

Why This Memorial Matters

The unveiling of this memorial represents more than a single event. It reflects:

  • The importance of remembrance across generations

  • The need for accessible places of reflection for families

  • The enduring connection between communities and the Armed Forces

  • The commitment to ensuring that sacrifice is never forgotten

The Welsh Guards, formed in 1915, have served in conflicts across the world, including Afghanistan, where the regiment faced significant losses during operational deployments. This memorial ensures those sacrifices are permanently recognised.

Reflection on Armed Forces Day

Attending the memorial on Armed Forces Day made the occasion even more poignant. While many events across the UK focus on celebration and recognition, this event served as a powerful reminder that Armed Forces Day is also about remembrance. Honouring those who are no longer here, as well as those who continue to serve.

Conclusion

The Welsh Guards Afghanistan Memorial Unveiling in Wrexham was a deeply moving and important occasion. It was a day defined by respect, reflection, and unity, and a reminder of the lasting impact of service and sacrifice.

We are honoured to have been part of it.

Lest we forget.
